The 12th Panhellenic Congress of Nuclear Medicine is under the auspices of the EANM

"Νuclear Medicine in Clinical Practice"

Dear colleagues,

The city of Ioannina is situated in the Northwest part of the Greek mainland, in the centre of the county of Epirus, which is an area with natural beauties, with a diverse landscape and famous touristic destinations, such as Zagorochoria and Metsovo. The city of Ioannina is built on the banks of the lake Pamvotida, in the centre of which, lays a beautiful castle associated with many legends and traditions. In the lake there is a small island. With a population of 200 residents and various sites such as the last residence of Ali-Pasas and a small monastic state with monasteries and hermitages of the post Byzantine era, this attraction is a pleasant surprise for every visitor.

Ioannina is a city with a rich history, a big tradition and an interesting architecture. The city experienced an economic and intellectual development in the last years of the Turkish occupation due to the creation of its famous Universities. This tradition continues until today. In the economic sector the city is developing continuously and it has various modern enterprises. Additionally, the creation of “Egnatia road” has contributed significantly to the local economy, as it connects the West part of Greece with the North and the East part. In the intellectual sector, the city continues to maintain a high place, and its University plays a significant role in this fact.

The University of Ioannina has 17 departments and approximately 20.000 students. It was funded in 1964 and it is operating as an independent Educational Institution from 1970. In almost half a century of its operation it has evolved in one of the largest Universities of the country. With its achievements in the sector of education and research it has met the original scope of its foundation and it has achieved its academic recognition in a national and international level, since many important scientists today are graduates of the university. The city has two hospitals; the General National Hospital “G. Chatzikostas” and the University General Hospital of Ioannina (known as Hospital “Douroutis”).

The organization of the Panhellenic Congress of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging constitutes an important institution in the field of Medicine, which gives the opportunity for a meeting of the Nuclear physicians and the collaborative scientists for an exchange of views regarding the current and the new scientific data and the various topical issues, which concern the scientific community in the everyday clinical practice.

The congresses central axis and slogan is:

«Nuclear Medicine in Clinical Practice»

Its topics mainly aim to give an emphasis in the important clinical role of the Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging to the demands and needs of modern Medicine and at the same time to highlight the current role and the crucial contribution it provides to the other medical specialties, by organizing round tables with the participation of clinical doctors of different specialties for the exchange and the promotion of their views.

Nuclear Medicine, which is inextricably linked with technology, evolves with an extremely fast pace. New medicines, new techniques, hybrid systems, they all create a new environment full of challenges which expand significantly its therapeutic and diagnostic capabilities, in Oncology, Neurology, Cardiology, Therapy, Dosing, Inflammations.

The Scientific Program will try to cover the full range of Nuclear Medicine, both in the clinical and in basic research, with the participation of distinguished Greek and foreign colleagues, to emphasize and redefine the position of Nuclear Medicine among the other specialties of Medicine, and also to highlight the value of the potential for the diagnostic and therapeutic approach it provides to the patient.

The potential of Molecular Imaging makes the Nuclear Medicine a discipline which now plays a significant role in the medical scene participating in the decision making process in both the management and the therapy of the patients. Hoping in the success of this upcoming congress, like the previous ones, we look forward in your contribution and your support, by your participation in it.

Sincerely,

Andreas D. Fotopoulos,
